Pompeo, Senegal’s Prime Minister Sign Deal To Modernize Dakar’s Power Sector
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and visiting Senegalese Prime Minister Mohammed Dionne signed a compact worth more than half a billion Dollars that aims to strengthen the west African country’s power sector, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a press release.
« On behalf of the United States, I congratulate Senegal on the signing of its Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact, » Pompeo said in a separate release on Monday.
« The $550 million Senegal Power Compact will modernize and strengthen Senegal’s power sector to increase economic growth. »
The grant will strengthen electrical transmission links in Senegal’s capital, expand electricity coverage in rural areas, and improve overall governance of the power sector, the release added.
The Government of Senegal will contribute an additional $50 million to the compact, bringing the total program cost to $600 million, according to the release.
